My Dog's Latest Catch (Not dead) by The-Lone-Wulf My Dog's Latest Catch (Not dead) by The-Lone-Wulf
This is my dog's latest catch. She managed to capture this young rabbit, so young that it hasn't even opened its eyes yet. We have no idea where it came from, and I can only assume that a mommy bunny was moving it, got into my dog's kill zone and ran off, leaving its young to be devoured for itself to live. My dog picked it up, showed it to my wife, then proceeded to turn around and attempt to bury it. Alive and squealing.

My wife yelled for me about the dog catching a rabbit. I expected an older rabbit that she couldn't have buried that fast. Boy, was I surprised. It was so small! If you look closely, you will see my fingers through the bag. It was just large enough to spread out across my fingers! I cleaned the dirt from its mouth, brushed the dirt off of its fur (all with my hand inside a plastic bag), and went to set it free. I turned to leave...

And couldn't... I called the SPCA. They told me that if the rabbit is unharmed (which it was from what I could tell. No bleeding or broken bones, and it KICKED!) that I should let it in a safe zone for mommy to find it, or bring it in. I had to go to work, so I reluctantly put the rabbit next to one of their escape hatches, said a little prayer, and left it for nature to take its course.

I really hope its mother comes looking...

I took it to the animal shelter. Last I saw of it it was alive. :)

My dog's a straight-out mutt. We know that she's got roughlly 49% black lab in her and some boxer based on her mother's physique but the mother was a rescue and no one knew her breed.

Yes, it was. :) I'm hoping it's still okay, but I'll never know.

Did the mom find it? Is it still there?

Unfortunately, the mother did not come back for it. I gave it until 9PM and then decided that it would be safer to rescue the poor little baby. I'm currently attempting to get a hold of local wild animal rescues so it can have a good, fighting chance.

Although the misses and myself are both finding ourselves wanting to keep and raise it...

After about 27 hours of phone calls and no reponses, I decided to take the rabbit to the SPCA. As I was returning back to work, I finally got a return call. I told the woman that I'd just dropped the little guy at the SPCA building. Haven't heard anything since.

it's so little and tiny! You should keep it if the mother doesn't come.
